What does 'progressive' mean?

Beyond its dictionary defintion - I have no clear idea of what the word 'progressive' actually MEANS in a political sense.

It is the top buzzword at The Guardian being used by all manner of columnsists and journos - but I am baffled by it.

Then I might have a hope of understanding what Julian Glover or Simon Jenkins are on about... (well perhaps not!)
